Who can become an SMT?

SMTs are people who care about people and planet and enjoy helping others learn. You do not need to be a scientist. Teachers, parents, youth leaders, farmers, retirees, health workers and NGO volunteers are all welcome.

Age 21 and over; Any qualification is accepted. Mindset for caring people and planet matters. Fluent in English and at least one other language. More than two languages will be given preference.

Because THINAI also serves children, every SMT must sign a child-safeguarding declaration, included at the end of this chapter (sections 4.13 and 4.14), and a code of conduct.

What is required of an SMT?

  • Attend all training sessions and finish the online modules in the THINAI app.

  • Pass the assessments, using the same two kinds as in THINAI itself: a Cognitive Assessment (what you understood) and a Creative Assessment (what you made or planned).

  • Teach three supervised practice sessions and receive feedback.

  • Agree to the JOBA code of conduct and child-safeguarding rules.

  • Teach or support at least three sessions a year to stay certified.

  • Have a smartphone or computer to use the THINAI app.

How long is the course?

About 40 hours over six to eight weeks in three parts. The first is self-paced online study in the app, about 15 hours. The second is a three-day face-to-face workshop. The third is the supervised practice teaching.

Where will it happen?

  • Offline. The workshop will be held in regional hubs in Malaysia. Practice teaching takes place in your own school or community.

  • Online. Study modules, discussion and mentoring happen in the THINAI app and by video meetings. Later cohorts can be offered in other countries where JOBA works.

How do I get certified?

You receive the JOBA Certified Sustainability Master Trainer certificate when you have attended all sessions, passed both assessments and completed the supervised practice teaching. Certificates are valid for two years and are renewed by teaching the minimum number of sessions and completing the hours of continuing learning as prescribed each year by JOBA.

What is the agreement between JOBA and an SMT?

Every SMT signs a written agreement.

  • Status. SMT’s are volunteers. They are not paid employees of JOBA.

  • Scope and standards.  An SMT may teach any projects for which they are certified for. The will sign the code of conduct and child-safeguarding rules.

  • Use of the THINAI name and materials. A licence to use the course materials, name and logo only for approved activity.

  • Fees and payment. The revenue will be shared between SMT and JOBA as 60:40. SMT will get 60% and JOBA will get 40%.

  • Reporting. Short records of sessions held, and participants reached will be reported to JOBA via methods that were agreed upon while signing the agreement.

  • Data protection. Learners' personal data, including children's data, will be carefully handled in line with Malaysian law.

  • Term, renewal and ending the agreement. The agreement lasts for two years. Both sides can end it by another agreement anytime.

What can a SMT do with the credential?

  • Teach THINAI projects in schools, families, community groups and workplaces within the agreed scope.

  • Run THINAI workshops and local learning circles.

  • Mentor new trainers and coaches.
