JOBA Workshop on Creating the THINAI Curriculum — Consolidated Report

Oct 5, 2026 · @Prof. Dr. John Britto Parisutham

Summary

The JOBA workshop, held from 08.09.2026 to 16.09.2026 at the NMCT Kurinji Farm in Koppanari, Coimbatore, refined the Thinai activity manual and defined its curriculum framework. All 215 Thinai activities prepared so far were read and revised by the experts.

The main outcomes of the workshop were:

•      The initiative was named SAVE Project (Skills, Arts & Humanities, Values, Ecology), with the tagline ‘Skills and Values for People and Planet’.

•      A four-level curriculum structure was created: Domain → Theme → Cluster → Project.

•      It was decided to rewrite the activities as content for a mobile app rather than publish them as a book.

•      The first lesson in the new structure (Solar Cooker) was developed.

•      The manual was field-tested with tribal teachers, social work students and tribal children.

Key Decisions

The decisions taken at the workshop defined the manual's purpose, name, format and structure.

1. The CAN Approach (10.09.2026)

It was decided to carry the workshop forward as three tasks:

•      Curriculum – defining the framework for the Thinai manual.

•      Activity Correction – revising the 215 activities already prepared.

•      New Activity – noting down new activities that emerge during the work.

2. Target Users

The original aim was to change the thinking and everyday habits of children. This broadened into a manual that reaches youth and children through adults, and finally into one that anyone can benefit from. A writing style suited to adults will therefore be followed in general.

The need for a companion volume covering Thinai philosophy, JOBA's values and short summaries of the activities was also raised.

3. SAVE Project – Name and Tagline

A catchy, memorable name was felt to be more effective than terms such as ‘Bionity’ or ‘Thinaiyam’ for spreading the initiative widely. Accordingly:

•      Name: SAVE – Skills, Arts & Humanities, Values, Ecology

•      Tagline: ‘Skills and Values for People and Planet’

4. An App Instead of a Book

It was decided not to publish the Thinai activities as a book, but to rewrite them as content for a mobile app (12.09.2026).

5. The AAAAA Lesson Format

Each activity will have five parts: At a glance, Analysis (lesson), Activity, Assessment, and Arts and Literature.

6. Curriculum Structure (14.09.2026)

To bring the many activities under a few headings, the following four-level structure was created:

1.     Domain (களம்) – Skills; Arts and Humanities; Values; Ecology.

a.     Theme (கரு) – e.g. under Ecology: Agriculture, Food, Waste.

i.       Cluster (தொகுதி) – e.g. under Agriculture: Seeds, Manure, Pest repellents.

1.     Project (திட்டச் செயல்பாடு) – e.g. the activities under the Seeds cluster; each contains a lesson and an activity.

Conceptual Discussions

On 11.09.2026, a detailed discussion was held around the question ‘What is Thinaiyam?’

Localisation, globalisation and glocalisation: These concepts were discussed in depth. Some participants held that the localisation embraced by Thinaiyam is a culture in which everyone discusses, with equal rights, what is good for their own area (village, country), accepting the good that comes from outside and rejecting the bad. Others felt that this is, in fact, glocalisation.

Thinai values: Diversity, uniqueness, relational strength (உறவாளுமை), effort and equality form the foundation of the activities. During revision, activities whose purpose or method did not align with these values were removed.

Yoga and meditation: On 13.09.2026, yoga and meditation were discussed with JOBA expert Nithya.

Field Testing and Manual Evaluation

The manual was tested with five different groups; the common finding was that the activities are understandable but need further simplification.

15.09.2026

Senguttai night school (three teachers: general subjects, music, handicrafts)

Songs, music, question–answer and game activities

Teachers took part skilfully and the children joyfully

In addition, three MSW students and three tribal teachers polished the stories and songs in the activities, with help from JOBA expert Suman (12.09.2026). Learning about the life of the Arakkadavu tribal community from Mrs. Sumathi provided useful background for adapting the activities to the local context.

Use of Claude AI

On 15.09.2026, Mr. Manoharan used Claude AI to cluster the Thinai activities prepared by the experts; a Claude AI Pro subscription was purchased for this purpose.

1.     Clustering: The prepared activities were grouped into clusters.

2.     App design trial: One project was mocked up in a mobile app format, which sparked many new ideas.

3.     Gap finding: Claude AI was asked whether any projects were missing beyond those already clustered, and a few new ones were obtained.

4.     Sample lesson: For one of these, a lesson was generated following the same structure of lesson, method, assessment and art forms used in the earlier lessons.

Partnership with NMCT

The NMCT Trust provided accommodation, food, volunteers and staff for the workshop, and agreed to pilot JOBA's lessons.

•      Funding consultation (08.09): NMCT senior official Mr. Prabhu and Trustee Mr. Sankar shared their experience of how NGOs can obtain funding from corporates. Mr. Manoharan noted this would help him start an NGO in Malaysia.

•      39th anniversary (13.09): JOBA was invited to guide NMCT's anniversary celebration, and JOBA experts took part on its behalf.

•      NMCT Global Academy (11.09): SAVE Project was introduced at a discussion with about 15 well-wishers on creating a global educational institution.

•      High-level consultation (16.09): Tribal teacher training, the JOBA workshop and the Global Academy were discussed. Copies of the lessons prepared by JOBA were handed to NMCT for pilot use.

Next Steps

The workshop has ended, but work on the Thinai projects continues.

•      ☐ Complete the grouping of prepared activities into clusters (Mr. Manoharan).

•      ☐ Obtain Nithya's feedback on the ‘Values’ syllabus.

•      ☐ Obtain Preethi's feedback on the ‘Skills’ syllabus.

•      ☐ Rewrite the remaining activities in the new lesson format, following the Solar Cooker model.

•      ☐ Rewrite the activities as content for the app.

•      ☐ Plan the companion volume on Thinai philosophy, values and activity summaries.

•      ☐ Gather feedback from NMCT's pilot use of the lessons.

•      ☐ Continue engaging the prospective experts (Selvi, Raj).

Post-workshop development: The SAVE framework that emerged from the workshop has since been expanded into THINAI, a six-domain framework: Technology (தொழிற்நுட்பவியல்), Humanities (மானுடவியல்), Indigeneity (மரபியல்), Nature (உயிரியல்), Aesthetics (அழகியல்) and Innovative Competencies (திறனியல்). Each project is designed for three age levels: Children, Youth and Adults.

Acknowledgements

Our thanks to all the experts who took part in ten fulfilling and joyful days of workshop. On behalf of JOBA, heartfelt thanks to Mr. Sankaranarayanan and Mrs. Pushkala of NMCT, who provided accommodation and food and sent volunteers and staff to support us.

1. CAN அணுகுமுறை (10.09.2026)

•    Activity Correction –

•    New Activity –

3. SAVE Project –

SAVE – Skills, Arts & Humanities, Values, Ecology

(Tag Line): ‘Skills and Values for People and Planet’

(App)

5. AAAAA பாட வடிவம்

ஒவ்வொரு செயல்பாடும் ஐந்து பகுதிகளைக் கொண்டிருக்கும்: At a glance (ஒரு பார்வையில்), Analysis (பாடம்/பகுப்பாய்வு), Activity (செயல்பாடு), Assessment (மதிப்பீடு), Arts and Literature (கலை மற்றும் இலக்கியம்).
